Artist's Comments:
These large gulls nest on all of the Channel Islands, especially East Anacapa. The chicks hatch in May and fledge in June and July. Males and females look alike (to us!) but they mate for life. It takes 5 years for their head feathers to turn pure white which indicates sexual maturity. Surprisingly, only one in 1,000 makes it to adulthood. Whoa!
