Beginning in December, elephant seals haul out on the sandy, isolated beaches of the Channel Islands where they mate and give birth. Males can be fifteen feet long and weigh over 5,000 pounds. They fight for territory that will attract females. Together, they are a noisy lot, making sounds that only 12-year-old boys can fully appreciate.
