Artist's Comments:
There are six species of pelicans worldwide but only the brown pelican makes the spectacular plunge, diving from heights of 30 to 60 feet. Pelicans are some of the oldest species of birds on earth, virtually unchanged for 20—30 million years. Once endangered by DDT, their population now thrives. West Anacapa and Santa Barbara Island are two of their main breeding grounds.
